Why the ×7 rule is wrong

Scientists at UC San Diego discovered in 2020 that dogs age much faster in their first years of life and slow down later. A 1-year-old dog is already equivalent to a 31-year-old human — not a 7-year-old.

The scientific formula

Human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This logarithmic formula is based on epigenetic DNA methylation research published in Cell Systems.

Why size matters

Larger dogs age faster and have shorter lifespans. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is roughly equivalent to a 56-year-old human, while a 10-year-old Great Dane is closer to 78.

How do you calculate a dog's age in human years?
The most accurate method uses the 2020 UCSD formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This is based on DNA methylation research and is far more accurate than the old ×7 rule.
Is the ×7 rule accurate?
No. The ×7 rule is a rough estimate that doesn't account for the rapid development in a dog's first years. A 1-year-old dog is already equivalent to about 31 human years.
Does dog size affect aging?
Yes. Larger dogs tend to age faster and have shorter lifespans. A Great Dane's life expectancy is about 10 years, while a small breed like a Chihuahua can live 18 years or more.
How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?
A 10-year-old medium-sized dog is approximately 68 human years old according to the scientific formula.
At what age is a dog considered senior?
Most dogs are considered senior between 10 and 13 years, depending on their size. Larger breeds enter their senior years earlier than smaller ones.
